Finally!

Did you miss me?! Well no worries loves because I AM BACK!

I’m going to kick this off by finally reviewing my Lara bars and Epic bars in full, I know you’ve been awaiting this post anxiously! ūüėČ

I will say my absolute favorite thing about both of these bars is I can read, and understand exactly what ALL of the ingredients are! As you might know I am dabbling in the world of Paleo, getting my feet wet if you will. I figure if I experiment with different products and recipes then I will feel more comfortable/less anxiety riddled when I finally decide to go full in. So short ingredient lists made up of real food makes me very happy.

Lara bars are Gluten free, dairy free, soy free, non-gmo, vegan AND kosher! That is a lot of free that translates into Pure Natural joy.

For the Lara bars the flavors I tried were Banana Bread, Blueberry Muffin, Peanut butter and Jelly and Peanut butter Cookie. Hands down the Peanut butter and Jelly one was my absolute favorite! The ingredients list is as follows: Dates, Peanuts, Unsweetened Cherries and Sea salt. Four, read them FOUR ingredients! Crazyness.

You wouldn’t think it but the unsweetened cherries are an extremely close second to actual jelly! Correct me if I’m wrong but I do believe most/all Lara bars have dates in them, they act as the binding agent keeping the ingredients in bar form instead of gloopy bundle of stuff form. As well as acting as a natural sweetener/sugar for the bars.

While I thought all the bars tasted good if I had to rank the flavors from most favorite to least it would basically be Peanut butter and Jelly, then a three-way tie for second, haha.

As of today I also have the Apple Pie flavor on stand by to try after my coworker said it was pretty delicious. She couldn’t resist getting one to try after I raved about them. She got it when we went to Whole foods together, which if you recall was only one of like five trips to Whole foods I made that week. It was glorious.

If you are interested in giving Lara bars a try I do want to mention that you check the ingredients. A few of the bars do have sugar added, naturally of course, but it is added. I don’t know exactly which ones but I do know that the Peanut butter Chocolate chip does. It’s added in the form of the chocolate, so it’s really not a big deal because it’s chocolate lol. I only mention it incase you are looking to use these for a food challenge like I will be. Other than those few bars do not be frightened by the grams of sugar, as I was at first, because all of the sugar comes naturally from the fruits.

I’m going to wrap this post up since it’s gotten a wee bit long, I’ll do a separate post for the epic bars. BUT let me know your favorite Lara bar flavors, or if you’re thinking of giving them a shot! Anyone have any suggestions for some natural bars or snack I should try? At the moment I’m using Lara and Epic as my breakfasts with some fruit or protein. (Fruit is paired with Epic and protein with Lara.)

Please drop me a line and let me know you’re still around!

Surprise Mini Haul

So as I mentioned last post, I went to Whole Foods after work today, again. The boy went with me this time and was very excited to discover that he could buy a beer and drink it while we shopped. As well as learning that they do beer and food tastings every friday, which looked awesome. They also have some cheese event coming up that sounds yummy.

¬†Because its cheese that’s why.

First a quick Lara bar update, The Peanut Butter and Jelly flavor is AMAZINGLY AWESOME AND DELICIOUS! Absolutely my favorite flavor so far and I seriously need to just go out and buy the biggest box I can find. Tomorrow I will finally be trying my Epic bar and I couldn’t be more excited.

Anyway, this post is dedicated to my newly budding addiction to Kombucha. I have now had three Kombuchas in the past three days, including today, and that makes me very happy. The brand I bought and tried is G.T.’s Kombucha the first I grabbed was the citrus which was pretty good and probably would have been better if I had read the bottle and NOT SHAKEN the Kombucha!!! Seriously, if you are about to try some don’t shake the bottle!!! The guy at Whole Foods told us that they have actually seen bottles explode, like glass breaking explode. A Little tip I got from the lovely and friendly @LivingLovingPaleo (Instagram, you should definitely check out her awesome pictures) is that about half way through drinking you can give it a light shake or two and get the floaty bits mixed in better without risking, you know, Kabloomie.

My first Kombucha!!

My first Kombucha!!

The second flavor I tried was Guava, and that one was delicious!! I went with the citrus first because it had less sugar, but even still the highest amount of sugar I saw was the Mango at 10 grams which is not bad at all. I think the Guava is my favorite at the moment. It had a very pink flavor, and that is the absolute best way I can describe it.

Guava and Citrus! Such pretty labeling.

Guava and Citrus! Such pretty labeling.

Ok so I’m going to try to describe what Kombucha tastes like for you all and hopefully you will be adventurous and give it a try. I was kind of nervous to try it myself because I just really didn’t know what to expect, and I don’t know anyone who had even heard of it let alone tried it haha. First what it is, Kombucha is a fermented tea drink that is packed tight with naturally occurring electrolytes, antioxidants and probiotics. It’s definitely a good tummy drink! It might take you a couple of gulps to acquire the taste but trust me you do acquire the taste and you will be happy for it! It can have a vinegary smell and taste to it and feels very bubbly while drinking, kind of like a healthy pop, or soda depending on your region.

The flavor I am currently drinking is the Trilogy which has some lemon juice and some other things I can’t remember right now (I’ll go look at the bottle in a few minutes.) This one is tasty as well, although I still think Guava takes the cake for me. If you are going to give this stuff a try I would suggest starting with the Guava because it has a bit of a sweet taste to it and the least amount of vinegary taste.

Fitting my 3rd would be Trilogy.

Fitting my 3rd would be Trilogy.

That’s about all I have for now, I’ll update this post later and make it more streamlined, at the moment I am tired and procrastinating helping the boy reupholster¬†the boat. Oh yeah you heard me right, he bought a boat. Go check out Breaking Out Of The Middle¬†to get the full scoop on that hoopla.

Drop me a line in the comments, have you tried Kombucha? What are your favorite flavors or brands? Anyone thinking of trying it? Has anyone tried kefir? That’s another thing on my list so any tips or descriptions of flavor is appreciated!

I have literally been to Whole Foods everyday this week! I’ve been to Trader Joe’s three times. I promise it wasn’t the plan! My coworker decided she had to have me grocery shop with her, and since I love grocery shopping, Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s I happily obliged.

I hadn’t planned on trying one certain thing on my list just yet, but I figured since I’m at Whole Foods anyways it only makes sense to jump the gun. Wednesday, guys, I had my very first Kombucha. Then yesterday one of my Best¬†friends ever decided she wanted me to go grocery shopping with her too! You can only imagine where we ended up right? Which resulted in my second Kombucha ever.

Are you ready for this next bit? I finished my coffee growler¬†this morning, and printed off coupons yesterday (that I forgot to take with me, of course) so that means that I will be at Whole Foods AGAIN today after work! I am by no means complaining, I just think it’s pretty hilarious. The people who work there are going to know me by name very very soon.

I don’t know if I am going to use all of my coupons just yet, or save them for my next Haul. I am definitely going to refill my growler¬†though because this coffee has been pretty glorious. I plan on posting an update from the last haul¬†and a review of my Kombuchas¬†after work, when I can post some pictures. In the meantime go check out the pics I put up¬†on Instagram to hold you over. Because I know you’re shaking with anticipation. ūüėČ

Whole Foods Haul Update

Alright, I’m about half way through using/trying the things I got at Whole Foods the other day. I figured I would let you know my thoughts so far!

The glass coffee tumbler is AWESOME! and Adorable. If you follow me on Instagram¬†(J_Munchkin) you already know it’s been featured in a few pictures. I love it. The coffee inside my super cool tumbler has been equally AMAZING! This morning I heated up my coconut milk in the microwave for about 20 seconds before adding it to my coffee.

The first day I made the coffee (read yesterday) I had a few clumps of coconut milk that didn’t mix well. I assumed it’s because I’m drinking iced coffee.¬†Micro-waving¬†the coconut milk took away that issue completely and it blended perfectly today.

I really enjoy using the maple syrup instead of sugar. It sweetens the coffee without covering up the coffee taste. That was always a problem I had with regular creamers and sugar. The vanilla extract cuts the bitter bite, the maple syrup sweetens and the coconut milk makes it so smooth! These were all extremely worth it buys in my book.

As of this morning I’ve only eaten two of my Lara bars. The Banana Bread and the Blueberry Muffin. They are both pretty good flavors, it’s very interesting that the bars have dates to sweeten and hold them together. I had never eaten a date before Lara bars. I’m really excited to try the two Peanut Butter flavors. I’m saving the Epic bar for last, as I am expecting it to be game changingly epic.

That’s about all I’ve got going on today. How is your Wednesday going?

Whole Foods Haul

Tags

Exciting things happened yesterday! I spent well over an hour wandering around Whole foods and came out with a pretty good haul that I wanted to share with you all! All of my finds came to a total of $55 and some change. I am keeping in mind that I bought a glass tumbler ($19) that is a one time purchase, my coffee will be half price next go around, and that $16 dollar maple syrup will last me quite awhile.

Whole Foods Haul #1

This journey started out as a simple “I am finally going to buy and try Lara bars.” I should have known better than to think I would be in and out with one item. Going to Trader Joe’s or Whole foods or Fresh Market is like going to Target, bad news bears for my wallet, and yet I end up too happy to mind (too much.)

I was on the hunt for Lara bars, and Chameleon Cold Brew. They were out of the Chameleon but I definitely made up for it. See, I have a list of about 15 things I’ve been dying to try. Along with Chameleon and Lara, Epic bars¬†are pretty high on that list. I wasn’t expecting to find any in my town and was resigned to ordering some when Lo and Behold there they were!

Epic Bar

I decided to try the Turkey almond and cranberry Epic bar first, I also got Banana Bread, Blueberry, Peanut Butter and Jelly and Peanut Butter cookie Lara bars. I will update as I try each flavor so you know which ones I think are best.

Blueberry, Peanut Butter and Jelly, Peanut butter cookie, Banana Bread

Blueberry, Peanut Butter and Jelly, Peanut butter cookie, Banana Bread

Another discovery I made was an iced coffee growler!! Whole foods had a growler of fresh made iced coffee for $8, and you can refill the growler for $4 every time after the first purchase! That is a nifty and exciting idea guys. Along with the Allegro iced coffee growler I found a glass coffee tumbler, also Allegro brand, that is just adorable.

Allegro Coffee and Tumbler

Allegro Coffee and Tumbler

I got it in my head to try coffee Paleo¬†style, and when¬†I¬†try something new I like to jazz it up to keep my interest. That’s how¬†I¬†justified my new tumbler that¬†I¬†didn’t need and yet love very much. So to make my coffee yummy¬†Paleo¬†style I bought a can of Whole food brand (365) canned organic coconut milk for creamer, and Shady Maple Farms brand Grade B Maple syrup for sweetener.

My attempt at Paleo coffee

My attempt at Paleo coffee

This is me, enjoying my delicious new way to make iced coffee. I didn’t measure any of my ingredients out when I made my coffee this morning because I was running behind and experimenting. The only things in¬†that adorable tumbler¬†full of deliciousness¬†were coffee,¬†maple syrup, coconut milk, and vanilla extract. (Don’t hound me if I’m not being prefect Paleo. I’m new, unsure, and experimenting. Suggestions¬†and recommendations are always welcome.) ūüôā

Yum and Cute!

Yum and Cute!

What do you put in your coffee? What have you tried new, or discovered? Any Whole foods¬†or other favorites¬†I should add to my Experiment list? Maybe some Paleo¬†tips and tricks for a newbie? What does Kombucha¬†taste like, I’m interested but kinda nervous.

A Recipe Review??

Tags

, , , , , ,

I think a recipe review is totally in order after what happened at last nights dinner.

Last night. I cooked, and ate. The most. AMAZING chicken AND homemade ranch!

Magical Food

Magical Food

Ok, well to be fair, I made the ranch and the dredge. The boy made the actual chicken and veggies. But still! He even liked my home-made mayo that turned into home-made ranch that he LOVED! He never really even ate ranch before me so to transition from none to store-bought to homemade and paleo is an impressive feat!

Allow me to pause for a¬†brief history of me and ranch. I’m southern. It’s more city southern, but it’s still southern. So ranch is a staple in my diet. If it wasn’t for ranch I wouldn’t have eaten a single thing in school. I’m not joking it went on everything. Ranch and pizza, ranch and corn, ranch and mashed potatoes, ranch and meatloaf, the list seriously goes on for days but I will spare you because you’re smart, and get the idea. Ranch.

I think you can guess what’s comin first.

New Found Love!

New Found Love!

The ranch recipe actually starts off having you make your own Paleo mayo. Don’t be intimidated, it took me two tries to get right. This video from Nom Nom Paleo helped me get it right that second try. Remember you’re only using the egg yolk, and stir in the olive oil slowly. I did add onion and garlic powder as well when I made the mayo, the boy and I have a shared deep love of garlic and onion so it made sense.

Then turning the mayo into ranch is as easy as adding 2 more TBS of lemon juice, and 1 TBS of dried dill. Simple enough even for me! I thought about adding some paprika into the ranch but wanted to give it a try as is with the chicken. I think for the next batch, which is coming so seriously extremely soon, I will use only 1 more TBS of lemon juice, and add that paprika in.

Now the glorious chicken!

Prepped and on the way to the oven!

Prepped and on the way to the oven!

This recipe comes from a guest blog post, written by Cassy from Fed And Fit, posted on Stupid Easy Paleo. The actual Recipe can be found here.

I won’t go over the full recipe since the original writers said it best, however here are my thoughts.

YUM!

Dippin' it up

Dippin’ it up

This chicken was AMAZING! Hands down worth making again, and again. I will tell you this recipe calls for pork rinds. Please don’t let that scare you off if you aren’t that into them. Neither me nor the boy had really eaten pork rinds before, and when he tried one out of the bag I thought for sure he was gonna walk out on me.

After the chicken is dredged, coated and cooked I promise you won’t even remember what it’s coated with. The rinds are mainly for crunch and add a new level or depth to the flavor without actually being noticeable. If you just can’t do it with the rinds you can switch them out for some high quality bread crumbs, but doing that it will no longer be considered Paleo. ¬†I’m sure there are other alternatives out there as well.

With that said, you need this chicken in your life. Especially if you are interested in Paleo, new to Paleo, or an ole pro.

Who’s gonna give this a try? Let me know what your thoughts were in the comments, or any modifications you make!

XOXO

J

P.S. An update, all of my coworkers tried my ranch and then hounded me for the recipe, so get this food into your life, they did. Lol.

Geting a little jazzy in here!

Hey there everyone! Just wanted to let you know I edited my Flying fox post and added some visual enhancement! Look at this little blogger starting to grow! I also posted an impromptu semi-review of a cycling class I took today.

Go check it out at BreakingOutOfTheMiddle!

I apologize for the split posts.. perhaps I should consolidate blogs..

The reasoning behind two blogs is one is personal growth and life stories, and this one is for more professional/serious product reviews. What do you all think? Should I stay split Like North and South Dakota/Carolina, or do what I think those states should and UNITE!

Let me know in the comments. ūüôā
